Mathematics and Scottish Country Dancing @ Planetarium, Napier Boys’ High School
Aug 27 @ 6:00 pm

Professor Rod Downey

Hawke’s Bay Branch Royal Society Te Apārangi

There are those who would argue that mathematics and Scottish Country Dancing are some of the pinnacles of human achievement. Rod works in mathematics and specifically algorithmics and the theory of computation.

Rod is a teacher and devisor of Scottish country dances. He will try to explain how the cognitive processes in his kind of mathematics and dancing resemble one another and give an insight into a small part of modern mathematics and an interesting and fun dance form.

Johnsonville Halloween/Samhain 2020 @ Johnsonville Bowling Club
Nov 2 @ 7:30 pm

An evening of fun Halloween-themed dances

We may think of Halloween as an American invention, but Samhain (pronounced Sah-win) was historically a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

According to Wikipedia, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man with similar festivals held at the same time of year in other Celtic lands.

It’s become a Club tradition to hold a fun night of Samhain-themed dances and music. Rod will bring us entertaining dances with a difference, some atmospheric music, some interesting moves, and lots of laughs as usual.

For those who like dressing up, start thinking about a bit (or a lot!) of Halloween themed costuming for the night – black and orange, witch’s hat, pumpkin, ghoul, ghost or whatever you like.

There are plenty of props to be found at The Warehouse, the $2 shops or the opshops! If you’re not into costuming, that’s fine too. Just come along and enjoy the fun.

See the fun at our Halloween Samhain night in 2019
