A one-day practical course for people with piano skills who would like to explore the role of the pianist in a Scottish Country Dance band. Not just for dancers – this is also your chance to bring your friend/family member into your world!
The course will cover:
- The role of the piano in a SCD band
- Bow-and-curtsey chords
- Vamping styles for reels, jigs and strathspeys
- The ‘shape’ of a SCD set of tunes
- Next steps
Pianists don’t need to be top-flight soloists. This is a very different approach: most of the time we’re not playing the tune. Some music theory is useful, especially understanding major and minor chords. There will be plenty of practice time, pianos/headphones provided.
Bring: Lunch (tea/coffee provided); A digital piano/keyboard if you have one
Register: email Lynne Scott or phone 021 846596
Lynne is the RSCDS NZ Branch Music Adviser
The venue has changed for this Beginner’s Class – now on at Johnsonville Bowling Club, 34 Frankmoore Avenue, Johnsonville, Wellington (opposite Phillip Street).

Our mid-year club gathering is always a fun event, with easy dances on a theme. Rod is currently hunting down dances with a Christmas theme, and hoping the Scottish Country Dancing Christmas Music CD he’s ordered will arrive from the UK in time!

6.30 – 7.30pm: We’ll enjoy our warming winter buffet main course, with BYO drinks
- for meat-eaters think slow braised lamb and Moroccan chicken
- vege-eaters will have a special meal too
- everyone will enjoy roast veges and salads
7.30 – 8.30’ish: Rod will bring us some Mid-Winter Christmas dances
8.30’ish: Time for dessert
Then – more dancing, before we pack up and head home.
